Counterflow State

Authenticity > Conformity

Wednesday 6am, the Warehouse District. Workout done, first meeting isn’t until 10am. Perfect time to grab some keys and a helmet and go for a ride in search of a morning coffee. The city was bustling as commuters heading to their offices arrived en masse from the suburbs. The cars lined up bumper to bumper, all inching along, transforming the main arteries feeding downtown into a maze of metal and frustrations. But there I was, cruising freely against the flow.

My journey would take me in the exact opposite direction from everyone else and their routine commutes. As I sped past the droves of commuters with barely another vehicle sharing these deserted lanes, my pursuit of a life on my own terms, and a strong resistance to accepting a standard script for what a career should be, was rarely so tangibly manifested as in this moment.

The Motopreneural Ethos

As entrepreneurs, we can take many cues from motorcycling. We are pushed to carve a different path. The world around you, once seeming like a rigid system, begins to shift as your unique journey takes you around the next corner, into the unknown. You notice how the road opens up before you, offering new perspectives. Even the people you encounter react differently. Even total strangers seemingly acknowledge the boldness of your journey.  The universe conspiring to recognize and reward your inflexibility to live life on your own terms, outside the norm.

Each twist of the throttle reinforces that you are not built to confirm. No longer just an idea, it’s now the reality that you live. It’s a testament to the power of embracing your own path in a world that often moves only in a single predestined direction.

We chose a different route. We opted for a path filled with uncertainty and challenges, but also with endless opportunities. We move against the congestion of conventional careers, charting our course towards uncharted territories.

Why are we like this? There are certain things that are important to how we live as entrepreneurs, that for me, also feed a passion for motorcycles.

Freedom + Choice

One of the most exhilarating aspects of being an entrepreneur is the freedom to make your own choices. You’re not bound by the constraints of a corporate hierarchy or the rigidity of traditional career paths. Instead, you have the liberty to explore, innovate, and create. Just like my ride that morning, you’re free to steer in any direction you choose, unencumbered by traffic jams or societal expectations.

Moving by Your Own Volition

Entrepreneurs are not just dreamers but doers. We don’t wait for opportunities to come to us; we create them. Moving on our own terms means we set our schedules, define our goals, and measure success in our unique ways. This independence allows us to pivot quickly, adapt to new challenges, and seize opportunities that others might miss. It’s akin to finding a hidden road that leads to breathtaking vistas while everyone else is stuck in gridlock.

Pushing the Boundaries

The entrepreneurial spirit is always looking forward, always anticipating the next big thing. While others focus on the immediate, the here and now, we have our eyes on the horizon. We thrive on innovation, disruption, and the thrill of exploring new frontiers. This forward-thinking mindset is what propels us ahead and allows us to see possibilities that others can’t even imagine.

With time, we learn that it’s not about arriving at the exact location on the map we drew that exists in our minds as some nirvana in our minds of prosperity and self fulfillment. It’s the route we take, the unanticipated twists and turns on the journey that build our character and skills. The goal isn’t just to put some pins in the map, but rather push out the borders of the maps as we know them and forge your own way into the great unknown.

The Courage to Be Different

Going against the grain requires courage. It means breaking away from the safety net of the familiar and venturing into the unknown. But with courage comes growth, and with growth comes success. The ability to see beyond the present, to anticipate market shifts, shifts in sentiment and to innovate relentlessly.

What other people think of me from the safety of their cars as I speed by on my motorcycle in the opposite direction is exactly none of my business. Finding success, as you define it, on your own terms is the ultimate reward.

By going against the grain, we create lasting impact and spearhead change, and we leave a mark on the world. Whether it’s through pioneering new technologies, revolutionizing industries, or inspiring others to follow their entrepreneurial dreams, our journeys contribute to a larger narrative of progress and innovation.

Conclusion – Venture Into the Unknown

My recent ride against the traffic was more than just a leisurely escape. A reminder of the entrepreneurial lifestyle that I cherish: a life where you carve your own path, make your own rules, and are fueled by the possibilities on the road ahead.

If you’re an entrepreneur, or simply someone who loves the thrill of motorcycling, remember that going against the grain is not just a choice—it’s a way of life. To venture into the unknown with confidence and excitement.

Ride safe, ride far, and make the journey count.
